Arizpe completed a 2-part feasibility study to determine the work necessary to upgrade and improve the institution’s electrical distribution system and their powerhouse (Central Plant).

The first part of the study identified options for upgrading all electrical infrastructure deficiencies critical to the institution and to improve efficiency. The study identified potential projects with associated construction budgets and presented an opinion on the work priorities to accomplish the identified improvements.

The second part of the study identified options for renovating the powerhouse to improve efficiency. The renovations included replacing outdated equipment and steam piping and to provide more energy efficient and reliable HVAC systems with digital controls. Additionally the project called to increase the emergency reserve capabilities in the chillers and boilers necessary to continuously operate the institution under fully loaded conditions at lower operations and maintenance costs.

Upon completion of the Feasibility Study, the Federal Bureau of Prisons awarded the design contract to Arizpe to prepare construction documents and to implement the recommended changes to the electrical and mechanical systems.
